Lotus 107C required modifications

E-mail Print PDF

Required modifications (based on a Tamiya 107B kit):

The following list is collected from internet forums, email exchange with other modelers and an article in an old Tamiya Magazine about this conversion.

Suspension

  • modify front suspension pick-ups for passive suspension

Bodywork

  • Engine cover shape is correct
  • Engine cover has extensions to the rear
  • two air ducts in rear engine cover
  • central (differential) air duct on rear engine cover is closed
  • (Front of) side pods shape is correct
  • Air exits in side pods need to be opened and scratch-built
  • Fuel fillers only needed for Brazilian GP and Pacific GP specs, later they had a cover in body color
  • use Tamiya Ferrari F189 gear shift lever, but can also be scratch-built very easily!

Wings

  • Front wing is correct (107 has different wing)
  • Vortex generator is ok until Monaco, Later races had no vortex generator and smaller end plates!
  • Rear wing is ok until SanMarino, later versions had different end plates!

Gearbox

  • semi-automatic gearbox initiated by a shift lever, difference in casing is unclear
  • 10cyl-Mugen would be slightly longer than 8cyl-Ford of the 107B (see wheelbase differences)

Possible donors for engine MF-351H-C (ZA-5C)

Modeler's Footwork FA13 (Mugen MF-351H)

  • almost the same engine
  • needs a different exhaust collector
  • kit includes Mugen/Honda script
  • peripheral parts differ

Tamiya Tyrrell 020 (Honda RA101E)

  • needs different cam covers
  • almost the same exhaust collector
  • has also some peripheral parts that closely match the Lotus configuration (coolers, piping)
  • Mugen/Honda decal or PE script needed

Dimension differences

  • Wheelbase: 2950mm (107C) - 2900mm (107B) due to the length of the Mugen engine...
  • Track front: 1650mm (107C) - 1650mm (107B)
  • Track rear: 1600mm (107C) - 1610mm (107B)

As a sidenote it has to be said, the Tamiya Lotus 107 kit is not a good base. It has a longer nose cone, different (not angled back) front wing end plates, a slightly different engine cowl and some other smaller issues.
