This conversion should result in a fully detailed model including engine, gearbox, removable cowl etc. like the Tamiya Lotus kits.
I've seen old decal sheets of UMi and a Japanese manufacturer, probably Hobby Base Custom. Recently released were sheets by Studio27 and Museum Collection.
So the biggest problem apart from the engine is solved ;-)
After starting the project, I discovered the Museum Collection decals are a little oversized! Also, they have some color differences compared to the real car. I ordered the Studio27 decals for the 107C now, which seem to be much better...
Actually, there are at least two possible engine donors (same displacement, same layout):
The Honda RA101E out of the Tyrrell 020 (Tamiya kit) or the Mugen MF-351H out of the Footwork FA13 (Modeler's kit). The MF-351H was developed by Mugen on the base of a Honda RA101E, which was a development of the 1990 Honda RA100E (McLaren MP4/5B). So the differences are not that big (see table below).
We had a discussion on SRC forum on possible engine donors. I decided to replicate the MF-351H engine of the Footwork FA13 kit in resin.
Meanwhile I decided to go for the SanMarino GP. One reason is that in later races some aerodynamic changes were introduced, i.e. no vortex generator on front wing and different rear wing end plates. Until the SanMarino GP they're like the one provided in the Tamiya 107B. So I'm a bit lazy here and will not modify the front and rear wing. Another reason is the livery, the 'Pepe Jeans' car looks just so cool ;-) The livery changed from race to race very quickly...
The car was driven from Rd.1 (Brazilian GP) until Rd.4 (Monaco GP) by Johnny Herbert/Pedro Lamy and until Rd. 6 (Canada GP) by Alex Zanardi.
