1989 Japanese GP #11 Nelson Piquet

The 101 brought Team Lotus another unsuccessful year.
Despite that the car was driven by former World Champion Nelson Piquet, it did not qualify at Spa. This was the low point of the year. One highlight came at the end of the year, when Piquet was 4th at the Japanese GP and Satoru Nakajima recorded the fastest lap in the heavy rain in Australia. He finished 4th and this was his best result so far in his last race with Lotus.

Lotus 101 progress

Started with the dry-fitting of the transkit parts...

I scratched a new dash board on top of the 102B part with two 0.3mm styrene sheets.
The steering wheel of the 101 (and the 102) was a special piece from Momo with a flattened bottom. I cut the 102B steering wheel and added the flat bottom with a styrene rod. Looks good to me!

Lotus 101 version and available kits

Race version

I have a 1/20 Thumb Creation transkit (incl. rain tires). But I recently decided to build Piquet's 4th placed Japan GP car.
I simply have more and better reference pictures for this GP. And I will also save the rain tires :-)

Available kits

Fortunately for us, Satoru is Japanese, so we got some choices for a 1/20 scale build:

  • Thumb Creation Resin Transkit (needs Tamiya 102B donor kit)
  • MOA Resin Transkit (needs Tamiya 102B donor kit)
  • Hobby Base Custom Resin Transkit (needs Tamiya 102B donor kit)
  • Modelers 101 Australia GP (Resin, white metal, photoetch parts) - best option, hard to come by ;-)
